Welcome to Simon Foster Design. I am a product designer specialising in sculptural lighting pieces. I value hand-made craftsmanship, natural materials, and sustainability with the use of locally sourced materials. I create sculptural, original lighting pieces using the process of steam bending wood. My pieces aim to challenge traditional lighting form and function and use shadow as an element of the design.

About Me
Passion for Craftsmanship
From a young age I had a passion for craft and creating making by hand. The sense of achievement and accomplishment I feel by taking my designs from rough drawings to finished physical items is the reason I was so drawn to wood working and product design. I first started my journey of design with Resistant Materials in secondary school. This was my first introduction to wood working and where I made my first wooden design, a small coffee table. My interest in design continued onto college where I studied 3D design and graphic design. This introduced me to new materials, processes, techniques, and allowed me to explore and discover my own process of design.
After college I was unsure what route to take and decided to leave further education to work in graphic design. After a few years of working I realised I still had a passion for 3D design and creating physical pieces. I decided to enrol in Manchester Metropolitan School of Art on a Product design and Craft course which I graduated from in 2023. It was during this course that I rediscovered my love for woodworking and was introduced to a process called Wood steam Bending. Since then I have continued to have a passion for creating steam bent sculptural pieces by hand and look forward to further developing my own process of design.
